The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ EAP offers a comprehensive training program for members who are interested in learning more about mental health and becoming resources for their communities. As part of this program, they invited Dr. Vernig to discuss suicide prevention. He covered stigma and the importance of having direct, compassionate conversations about suicide, as well as risk/protective factors and warning signs of increased suicide risk. Translating these clinical topics for a lay audience with training in mental health, he provided actionable information and an understanding of how to support someone who may be going through a crisis.
